WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

That time when I was invited to Social Media Week Nairobi as an Expert in building community. Take a good look at the flyer and the designations of the other speakers. Then take a look at mine.

While most of them were from International Organizations like LinkedIn, Twitter and Google, I was the only one there because I had a Facebook Group of 11,000 members. Yet, there I was.

Steve Harris always says, “It is not what you don’t have that limits you, it is what you have but don’t know how to use”.

When Moses encountered the burning bush and kept telling God he had nothing with which to persuade the children of Israel that he was truly sent, God asked him, “What do you have in your hand?”

When Jesus had taught for 3 days and the people were hungry, He used what was available- 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish -to feed 5,000 men.

What do you have in your hand? Have you been downplaying its significance? Have you been wishing you had another person’s gifts and resources instead of focusing on your own?

You do not have an empty hand, you just haven’t focused enough on what you do have, that is why you are stuck and frustrated.

Take out your pen and journal. Make a table with two columns. Make a list of all the tangible (material) resources you have on one column, then make a list of all the intangible (immaterial) resources you have on the other column.

Don’t stop writing until you have truly exhausted every resource idea in your mind.

Then ask yourself this: “What can I do with these resources I have?”

Ponder this question until you begin to have ideas. Write down all the ideas you have, no matter how ridiculous they appear.

Then pick one- any one -and get to work. Keep working those ideas till you hit pay dirt.

This is how you use what you have to open doors and opportunities for you.

I wish you all the best.
