As I sat, on my way to a full day of training to learn yet another skill and open another stream of income, my thoughts wonder to a question I received in my inbox from a gentleman.
He asked me what I did when I made my first million. I am presuming he was talking about the first million I made from my career in Thought Leadership and running an Online Business.
I didn’t know how to tell him that I traveled to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for 15 days. I was not sure he would understand, unless I put some context.
I realized that many times when thought leaders answer questions like these and don’t have time to give context, it can be misleading.
They may then make their own first million, then travel and blow it all away and achieve nothing productive, just because some thought leader said that’s what they did.
So if the gentleman who sent the question is reading this, here’s my answer:
When I made my first million, I took 15 days out of a month to rest and re-strategize for the next level of my business.
Why did I choose to travel out of the country for a couple of reasons:
- I could afford it. One million wasn’t all I had in my account.
- I travel as an investment and count it as a business expense. I am my business’ asset, and just as a machine in a factory has to be maintained and oiled regularly to remain in optimum condition, so also human assets need to take a break.
- Travel has been one of my greatest personal development investments. I think better when I’m not in an environment that is designed to stress me. My best work comes from a place of peace, tranquil and not having to think about charging my phone and laptop because NEPA.
In 2017 when I traveled to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, I re-strategized for my new level of business. I needed to begin operating as a multiple 7-figure business as I had attained that new level.
In 2018, when I had done 5 million naira in my business, I applied to speak at Social Media week Nairobi and organized my first international event in Tanzania. It was a work-cation as well.
It was an investment in my business. I had truly gone global. I had also become comfortable making multiple 7-figures. See? My investment in the Abu-Dhabi/Dubai trip in 2017 had paid off.
So what did I do in Tanzania? Booked into a resort by the Indian ocean and re-strategize for my next level of business: Partner with global brands, finally create a program to help a thousand people make a million, create 7 new streams of income and take my income to 8-figures.
By December 2018, I had accomplished those goals.
You see? Traveling for me isn’t just for the sake of traveling. It is when I can truly detach from my usual environment, truly rest and truly be at my highest creative capabilities, and it’s not just me.
I have studied my friends and mentors. When they are on vacation or as soon as they come back, they immediately go into a new level of creativity, influence and impact.
It’s as if the village people cannot cross the airport, so they don’t have the power to disrupt your creativity.
I knew this early on, that’s why I created the Business Retreat in Dubai. I want to help Business Owners just like you, experience what I’ve experience.
Don’t get me wrong, when I travel, I ensure I have serious fun! I also work in between the fun times.
The best part? There is a Dubai retreat coming up.
Wouldn’t you like to join us as well?
You can keep telling yourself, “One day, one day, this will be me”
Or you can tell yourself, “Today is Day 1 for me to be this.”
You choose.
