HOW TO CREATE AN ONLINE COURSE.

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Hi there!

I just finished the outline for my new course I’m publishing in January and I remembered someone asking me how I create my online courses, in a previous “Ask Me Anything” post I did.

Here’s the answer I gave (with a little extra notes) and I thought to share here so that more people can actually see this:

How To Create An Online Course.

  1. Have an objective in mind. What do you want people to get out of your course?
  2. Do a brain dump (mind map) write out everything in your head that you want to include in your course. Don’t stop until you’re empty.
  3. Arrange the things you’ve written down in number 2 above, into an outline that flows. Which comes before which? Which ones can be grouped together to form a module or a lesson?
  4. Review your outline. Does the sequence flow without interruption? Does it fulfill the objective you wrote down in number 1 above? Does it contain everything that should be contained in the course?
  5. Name the course. Give it a name that is memorable but also speaks to the results people stand to gain by taking your course.
  6. Begin writing out the script for each module. Always have a script so you don’t come up empty when it’s time to record the course.
  7. Create your slides using PowerPoint, Keynote or Prezi, which ever one you have on your laptop.
  8. Use screencast-o-matic, Camtasia or Zoom to record your voice over your slides. Zoom is free and very easy to use. It’s what I use to record my own courses.
  9. Save your course and upload onto your online academy, an LMS (Learning Management System) or whatever platform that serves you. LMS include TrainQuarters by our very own Steph Obi, The Teachable Tribe (Teachable), Thinkific, Udemy, Skillshare and so on.
  10. Create your marketing strategy, launch with a bang and sell.

This is an entire class I just briefly summarized. It’s a bit more intricate but this should give you an idea. Who’s going to create their online course?
